Labour Election: Uitheachair first to throw hat in the ring

The race for Labour leadership has begun with only one campaign announcement taking place so far, coming from Tomás Uitheachair.

The two-time Taoiseach is hoping to take over from current Taoiseach Lucy O'Doibhilin, who led the party for seven months.

Uitheachair this term served as foreign minister and defence & aerospace minister under O'Doibhilin.

Should the minister be elected and carry out his full third term, he would become the longest serving Irish Taoiseach, beating former Fine Gael rival James Acheson.
